Mat Croker would probably fall into the same category,there were rumours about him last season but he signed a one year extension to stay in the NRL. Be a real statement of intent if we could even get one of them. But if we’re going to go down the Marquis route we desperately need a half back.

It`s a start, just need another 10 or 12 high quality players to join him. At the moment, assuming Amone goes, we have about 6 maximum who are SL standard, Hoy, Rooney, Senior, Quarequare, Lawler & Mellor. The rest would struggle to get into any of the Championship teams.. Two centres, 2 half-backs, and 6 forwards are the minimum we need.

Can’t see any way we’ll be getting 10 players in for next season even though we probably need that many. All of Stueys list have contracts for next season with the exception of Lawler so that’s a decent start. George is one of seven out of contract at the end of the season but the only one I’d want to see renewed, Simms maybe as a squad player. Westy been a great servant but maybe had his time and the rest Milnes included just aren’t good enough. So unless we’re going to pay some off early I’d say six new faces max unless we get some more significant investment. Rooney once fit again is one of the best youngsters out there,Matveyev and Windley are knocking on the door. A couple of Marquis signings would be a dream but that wouldn’t leave much to spend on the rest of the squad. Not all doom and gloom but then you remember who’s in charge of recruitment. 🤷🏼

I’d expect us to bring players in but it’ll take time. The next problem is whose players are they. If they are DMs players then they might not fit should his way of playing not work and he gets the boot. We don’t know if Mr Jepson is a kneejerk reactor or takes advice and takes time to decide. I suppose that’s why Chester is believed to be coming in. Mr Jepson can bring in and get rid of players whenever if he’s prepared to spend the money and we are doing it at the moment to some extent, ala Namo. This is going to take time but it needs the right people to take advice from.

Definitely a new coach. If your up to it McGuire would have least improved the team, which he asnt. We could have the Aussie national team and McGuire would take it backwards. I’ve seen more heart, spirt, motivation and structure down at lock lane. McGuire is out of his depth. He should have started in the championship and work is way up.

Rumour I heard was that he had to put on weight to play for PNG as he wouldn’t get in at hooker. So a backrower/13. Can’t/won’t lose it and the coaching staff aren’t happy. If Mr Jepson is convinced with DM being the man then I can’t fault him for backing him 100%. Powell got the same backing and did well.

Maturecasfan Judging by our league position I’d say there’s an awful lot better out there than what we have,you hit the nail on the head when you asked if we could persuade them to come. Chris Chester certainly got a job on. When you look at our squad in its entirety how many could find themselves a place in any other squad. Hoy,Mellor definitely,Rooney and Qareqare when fit, you could make a case for the Seniors,Simbiken shows promise and Lawler is a solid consistent performer,but with the best will in the world the rest would struggle to get into any team above us in the table. It’s going to take time and money to rebuild the squad,it can be done,look at Wakey and how much Hull have improved this season,shaking off the clubs current image of being a shoestring operation with poor facilities and making it an attractive place to want to play could be the hardest job of all.

So between us we’ve come up with 7 names,8 at a push,assuming we have a base squad of 30 for next season and 6 of those spots are taken by youngsters that leaves a frightening number to recruit. Worryingly none of us thought either of our first choice halves were worth keeping and not a prop to be seen if you discount Lawler who is in truth a second row,so if Jordan Lane is confirmed that would leave us pretty decent in that department. Let’s hope between now and the end of the season some of the current squad show something that earns them a place otherwise we’re grand at full back,OK on the wings and have options at second row a couple of promising youngsters and little else.

Hepworth I hear Chris Chester is casting his net far and wide in the search for talent,and fair play to him for that,he’s noted for having a good eye for a player and has great contacts. In a salary capped sport you can have your marquis players,and your solid squad members but you also need to be producing your own players or identifying talent outside of the top leagues to compete consistently. Had I not been nudged in the right direction the other day i wouldn’t have watched an Aussie reserve game,standard was good and featured Caius Fa’atilis brother Felix,what a player that young lad is already. When you see who we’ve signed from overseas over the years recruitment is clearly not an exact science but I like the idea of a Director of Rugby being able to think outside the box.

I agree with @Hepworth to a broad extent, higher level sport has now become a specialist game of recruitment, you only have to look at Prem football now; the game isn’t (for most) sign the best talent, the game is recruit potential successfully and build a progression, like Brighton, Palace etc… the success for us is never going to be signing Feldt, Sivo, Vaughan, it is signing potential who eventually go on for big money.

Easy to say of course, harder to do.
